I love a lazy Sunday morning, today was one of those. I woke up feeling contented with life.
One of the new habits I’ve developed in 2020 is having breakfast everyday. I’ve begun to have a morning smoothie which varies with the fruit in season.
Tropical Fruit Cravings
When I was on holiday in France at the beginning of the year I realised just how much I love tropical fruit. Here in Cairns we are so blessed with a plethora of amazing produce, and the ultra tropical fruits are super interesting to me.
Since coming home from that big holiday I’ve sought to include local fruits into my breakfast every day. At the moment the black sapote season is just coming to an end, and it’s the perfect fruit to include in a smoothie.
Taking advantage of the Black Sapote
I’ve got to say it’s a weird fruit. It looks like melted dark dark chocolate, and it is really gooey. They come off the tree rock hard, and you need to wait a week or two until they’re ripe. Ripe means you can put your finger through it, and it seems like you should throw it out.
To the uninitiated, it feels and looks gross.
Depite looking like chocolate, it tastes nothing like it. Some people call it a chocolate pudding fruit. And this is what turned me off them for the longest time. I called them fraud fruit. Their flavour is mild and soft. It has almost no perfume. But the texture is exquisite. It definitely deserves the pudding moniker.
Morning Decadence Smoothie Recipe
Here’s the recipe, you might like to recreate. I call this one Morning Decadence because it’s so rich and satisfying. Perfect for a lazy Sunday morning.
- 100g Black Sapote
- 20g Chia Seeds
- 2 tbsp Cacao Powder
- 250ml Buttermilk
- 125g ice
- 1 banana
- 6 pitted dates
I put everything into a jug and use my stick blender to combine. Then sit on my back deck and listen to the birds going about their day.
